DESCRIPTION: Coste di Rose is a small additional geographical mention of the municipality of Barolo, on a steep slope that descends steeply from the top of the Bosco della Fava until it touches the border of Monforte d'Alba. The greatest emotion is the one you feel when you reach the top of the vineyard, where a dune of extremely pure Diano Sandstone stands out, originating in the Tortonian area, about five meters high. The presence of these ancient sands gives Barolo DOCG Coste di Rose its distinctive trait: tones of cherry and rose, mint and sweet spices, silky tannins and a satisfying sip. VINEYARDS AND TERROIR: Coste di Rose MGA, Municipality of Barolo.
CULTIVATION: In 1971, Aldo Vaira was one of the first supporters of organic farming in Piedmont. The grassing of the vineyards has been practiced for the past 50 consecutive years, so as to preserve the soil from erosion, aerate it and regenerate it. With an incredible ratio of manual labor per hectare, viticulture from Vajra is a practice of love and attention. In recent years, research has also focused on monitoring and enriching the biodiversity of flora and fauna of the company's vineyards, fields and woods. The cellar has a certification of environmental sustainability (UNI EN 11233:2009) and organic cultivation.
VINTAGE: 2016 is a wonderful classic vintage: very high quality, aromatic purity and generosity of harvest. After a mild winter, temperatures dropped sharply in March with heavy rains restoring water supplies. The favorable climate has given us a generous flowering which has been reflected in wines that are airy and full of energy. Night temperatures remained low throughout the spring, and phenological maturation did not begin until the end of summer. The 2016 vintage recalls 2004, 2008 and 2013 and will be remembered as one of the latest of the decade. HARVEST AND VINIFICATION: In 2016, Coste di Rose was harvested on 11th October. The grapes are harvested by hand, destemmed and vinified in truncated conical vats. The vinification lasted 55 days, twenty of which with submerged cap. Spontaneous malolactic fermentation in the following spring, followed by aging in Slavonian oak barrels until bottling on July 29, 2019.
TASTING NOTES: Barolo DOCG Coste di Rose 2016 is a wine of finesse and complexity. Thanks to the uniqueness of the sandstones, it is a generous, accessible and versatile wine with food. The aromas of rose, morello cherry and cherry stone, licorice, mint and sweet spices emerge from the glass with momentum. On the palate, Coste di Rose is juicy, with dark cherry tones, silky tannins and a long, salty finish.
