Climate

Winter 2018 was characterized by temperatures that tended to be below average and frequent rainfall. Spring, on the other hand, was mild and characterized by warm and sunny days which favored an earlier budding and subsequent flowering phase, which took place from the end of May. A few rainy events around mid-June allowed the plants to continue their vegetative development regularly, while the rise in temperatures favored setting about a week earlier than the average for the period. The basically hot and dry summer, without heat peaks, made it possible to start the ripening process of the grapes in the best possible way; the excellent temperature ranges between day and night ensured a slow and gradual technological and phenolic maturation of the bunches, which at the time of harvesting were in perfect health. The harvest of the grapes destined for Bramasole took place starting from 21st September.

Vinification

Upon arrival in the cellar, the grapes were destemmed and softly pressed. The must was transferred to stainless steel tanks where alcoholic fermentation took place at a controlled temperature of 28°C. The maceration lasted for about 15 days, with soft mechanical interventions aimed at extracting the aromatic component and sweet and non-astringent tannins. The wine thus obtained was transferred to new and second-use French oak barriques, where malolactic fermentation took place. The maturation period, lasting about 18 months, ended with bottling which took place in the spring of 2020.

Historical data

La Braccesca extends over 508 hectares where the ancient farm of the Bracci counts once stood, from which the name of the estate and its coat of arms derive: an arm covered in armor holding a sword. The total area of the vineyards is 340 hectares divided into two bodies: the first, of 366 hectares of which 237 are planted with vines, is located on the border between the municipalities of Montepulciano and Cortona. The other plot, 142 hectares of which 103 are vineyards, extends as far as Montepulciano between three of the most renowned sub-areas for the production of great red wines: Cervognano, Santa Pia and Gracciano. And it is precisely from the sunniest segment of the vineyard, from one of the areas of Cortona most suited to the cultivation of quality Syrah, that Bramasole is born. A wine capable of evolving over time and narrating, according to a new variety, a territory with an ancient winemaking tradition. The first vintage of Bramasole produced was 2000.

Tasting notes

Bramasole 2018 has an intense ruby red color. The nose is elegant: notes of ripe cherry, plum and black cherry are combined with delicate spicy sensations of pepper and a sweet aroma of licorice. On the palate it is powerful, rich and balanced, with tannins present but velvety and supported by a good freshness. The finish is long and persistent, characterized by pleasant notes of vanilla and blackberries in the aftertaste.
