Le Volte dell'Ornellaia combines a Mediterranean expression of generosity with structure and complexity, reflecting the philosophy of Ornellaia. Le Volte dell'Ornellaia is a fine wine for those who love wine spontaneously, without the need for ceremonies.
“Ruby red with purple reflections, Le Volte dell'Ornellaia 2020 is vinous on the nose: it releases a complexity of aromas ranging from ripe red fruits, to the Mediterranean scrub, up to delicate notes of tobacco and spices. The mouthfeel is soft and silky, but at the same time supported by a lively acidity that gives us a crunchy and persistent finish. "
After a mild and rainy winter, March saw a temporary drop in temperatures with a few nights below 0 ° C at the very beginning of budding in the last week of the month. However, the newly opened shoots were still protected by the cottony tissue of the bud, which prevented damage from frost. The rest of spring saw generally warm weather with normal rainfall, guaranteeing regular vegetative development until flowering took place between 20 and 25 May. In June, a rainy passage of great intensity towards the middle of the month, followed a very long period of drought with a substantial absence of rain and torrid temperatures until the end of August. The veraison took place in a homogeneous and fast way between 20 and 25 July, starting the ripening of the grapes under a blazing sun. At the end of August, rains arrived which led to a considerable drop in temperatures, with night lows even up to 13 ° C, ideal conditions for completing the maturation of the Merlots. Their harvest took place quickly and quickly to preserve their freshness as much as possible and just in time to avoid a sudden heat wave of a week, where the thermometer marked up to 37 degrees, leading us to start harvesting the later vines already. from 17 September. Towards the end of the month a rainy passage finally brought the climatic conditions back to normal, allowing us to conclude the harvest on October 3rd.
The vinification was done separately in small steel tanks respecting the different varietal characteristics during the fermentation phases. The alcoholic fermentation was followed by the malolactic fermentation, always in steel tanks. The refinement phase lasted 10 months partly in barriques, previously used for Ornellaia, the other part in concrete tanks, to obtain a perfect balance between tannic structure and fruity expression.
