At the beginning of the season, in April, a terrible wave of frost hit the whole area of ​​lower Piedmont, with disastrous results, as the vine was budding. “Magically”, the gems of the magical vineyard were saved and, at the time of the harvest, bunches of excellent quality were presented, while all the surrounding and neighboring vineyards, given the frost, were not even harvested. More explanations can be found for this phenomenon: science finds them in the southern exposure and in the fact that it is a hill sheltered by trees and buildings; while the magical explanation of the Mahoi of Langa is in the stones, which protected the vines and their fruits with their beneficial influence. Magic stone is nothing more than the historical interpretation of how Langa wine was conceived many years ago, which later became Barolo. Nebbiolo, the most important grape of Piedmont, historically, given the cooler climates than today, was not vinified separately, but was passed over the skins of Barbera. This allowed to dampen the tannin, increase the fruit and give a more precise acidity, making Nebbiolo a more pleasant and impactful wine, maintaining its longevity. We decided to reinterpret this ancient Langa technique, where, halfway through fermentation when the Nebbiolo is on its skins, a delastage is made by separating the wine from the skin of the grapes and passing it on the Barbera skins in contact for at least 2 hours. After this step, the wine is put back on its original skins, those of the Nebbiolo. After the alcoholic fermentation, the wine is put in submerged cap maceration for short periods of maximum 20 days. Here the magic happens: the wine independently carries out the malolactic fermentation, the tannin softens, the acidity is in balance with the body becoming a disarming elegance, so elegant that it is almost beautiful to drink immediately. With a year's passage in large barrels, the complexity and structure of the wine find their perfect dimension. Immediate, elegant, with an explosion of freshness on the nose, it is a wine that can live for a long time even in the bottle. Simply magical.
