Vinification: Grapes from the single Lazzarito vineyard in Serralunga d'Alba, with around 4,500 plants per hectare and an average age of 38 years. Lazzarito is a fabulous amphitheater-shaped plot with south-west exposure, with calcareous-clayey soil. Our total area is about 2 hectares. The fermentation lasts about 4 weeks in a steel tank in contact with the skins. This time includes pre- and post-fermentation maceration using the ancient submerged cap method. The malolactic fermentation is carried out in wood.

Aging: Approximately 30 months in wood between barriques and oak barrels.

Description: intense garnet red colour. The nose is fascinating and deep. Notes of hay, cut grass, tobacco, white pepper and wild mint are perceived. On the palate it is robust, muscular, with a taut and mineral finish. The tannin is typical of Serralunga, angular, austere and very deep. Pleasant sweet persistence on the finish.

“Vietti's Barolo Lazzarito 2017 is absolutely wonderful. Despite the complex growing season, there seems to have been no problems here. More than anything else the Lazzarito impresses with its magnificent depth and “stature”. Super-ripe red fruit, white pepper, mint, tobacco, salami, spices and rose petals gradually unfold in the glass. I would not be in such a hurry to uncork this wine. For years, Lazzarito has been one of the Vietti wines that has improved the most. 2017 is really captivating.”

(A. Galloni, February 2021)

Pairings: game, red meats and cheeses.
