THE CLIMATE

After a mild and rainy winter, March saw a temporary drop in temperatures with a few nights below 0 ° C at the very beginning of budding in the last week of the month. However, the newly opened shoots were still protected by the cottony tissue of the bud, which prevented damage from frost. The rest of spring saw generally warm weather with normal rainfall, guaranteeing regular vegetative development until flowering took place between 20 and 25 May. In June, a rainy passage of great intensity towards the middle of the month, followed a very long period of drought with a substantial absence of rain and torrid temperatures until the end of August. The veraison took place in a homogeneous and fast way between 20 and 25 July, starting the ripening of the grapes under a blazing sun. At the end of August, rains arrived which led to a considerable drop in temperatures, with night lows even up to 13 ° C, ideal conditions for completing the maturation of the Merlots. Their harvest took place quickly and quickly to preserve their freshness as much as possible and just in time to avoid a sudden one week heat wave, where the thermometer marked up to 37 degrees. The Merlot harvest was completed on 14 September, followed almost immediately by the Cabernet Franc harvest, to conclude the harvest on 16 September.

VINIFICATION AND AGING

The grapes were harvested by hand in 15 kg crates. After destemming and light pressing, the grapes were transferred to concrete tanks by gravity, without any pumping. Each single parcel of the vineyard was vinified separately. Fermentation took place spontaneously with indigenous yeasts at temperatures around 25-28 ° C, with two or three pumpovers per day and delestages where necessary. The total time in the tanks ranged from 21 to 25 days. The malolactic fermentation took place in barriques, 50% of new oak. After the first 12 months of aging, the wine was blended and reintroduced in barriques for another 3 months, before bottling.

TASTING NOTES

The purple and charged color of Massetino 2020 immediately stands out to the eye, ready to reveal its strong identity. The hints of ripe cherry and undergrowth perceived on the nose, find a coherent correspondence to the taste with a nice crunchiness and freshness of the fruit. A combination of power and final flavor, Massetino 2020 perfectly embodies the typical traits of the vintage.
